THURSDAY THINKER Answer for July 7, 2016

Which characteristic does NOT belong when describing the high health-risk population within the workforce?

Answer: C. Average age is 60 years.

Researchers have shown that the population suffering from multiple chronic conditions (MCC) tends to have the highest risk of future healthcare expenditures1. According to an analysis of insurance health claims data, Benefit Performance Associates (BPA) found the average age of those suffering from four or more chronic conditions to be 50 years of age2. BPA has also found that the top 20% of healthcare claimants are utilizing approximately 80% of the spends2.

Additionally, a literature review by Johns (2009) revealed that the percentage of lost productivity related to presenteeism, which is described as showing up for work while sick, has increased to 53% and has been found to cost over an annual of 24 million dollars, as compared to a reported annual loss of 21 million dollars for absenteeism.

The Integrated Health Advocacy Program (IHAP) is reducing healthcare costs for this at-risk population by assisting these individuals become active participants in their healthcare.
